Studying migrating seabirds and wildfowl has, for us authors, become somewhat of a life-style. There are many reasons for this, in fact too many to delve into detail here, but those readers who have witnessed a spectacular day with band after band of passing birds will understand our passion. It is a sheer force of natural powers, unaffected by worldly things, that characterises a fine day seawatching. Wave after wave of flocks pass determinedly, paying no attention to the weather elements. It is a majestic show that is put on, and one feels that nothing, absolutely nothing, can stop the hundreds of thousands of wings beating. The energy produced by these small machines warms our hearts as we shelter from the cold wind and penetrating drizzle behind telescopes or between fellow birders…
However, it is often not enough for us birders just to experience this, we want to find out what we are seeing and which species that are moving through. This book is mainly about that: identifying flying and migrating seabirds and wildfowl in field conditions.

With 376 pages and more than 690 colour photographs this guide covers all species of seabirds and wildfowl that occurs regularly along the western European seaboard, including many subspecies and most vagrants from southern and arctic waters and North America. These groups of species are represented: divers, grebes, albatrosses, fulmars, petrels, shearwaters, storm-petrels, boobies/gannets, tropicbirds, frigatebirds, cormorants, swans, geese, ducks, mergansers, skuas, gulls, terns and auks.

We endeavour to convey useful field characters for each species. It often a question of jizz rather than small details in silhouettes and plumages. It is also important to remember that we have written from a perspective of field use. A passing bird will only reveal itself for a short moment, you may only have a minute or a few seconds to record characters, and it is thus essential to know exactly what to look for. We hope that you will find this book useful for that purpose, but also that you will find it useful for reference even after the bird has disappeared. We have omitted plumage characters which we consider to be of limited value in the field of flying seabirds, as well as characters which are useful for identification in the hand or when the bird needs to be scrutinised at length. There are already a number of books covering these aspects in adequate detail.

We hope that this book will help increase an already growing number of seawatchers. Being amongst a group of observers at a seawatching site, not only allows you to share great experiences, but also to discuss features and advance the field identification of seabirds. We also hope that birders already hooked on seawatching will find useful information in the book. Seawatching is not just instructive and interesting, but also great fun and an exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience. And the unexpected always lurks around the corner…

Over 690 photographs

The book will be illustrated with colour photos of all European Seabirds and Wildfowl in flight and our intention was to include photos of all species, subspecies, plumages, sexes, flocks, different angles and so on. Not surprising, it turned out to be very difficult to find in-flight photos of all those things, so we had to put a lot of extra effort in this work.
Some common species are almost impossible to see in full flight and it is of course even more difficult to catch that rare moment on a photo! How many have seen a flying Little Grebe, for instance!? Another problem was to find in-flight shots of some of the rare species, such as Swinhoe´s Storm-petrel. But you´ll find photos of both Little Grebe and Swinhoe´s Storm-petrel in flight in the book, together with other species that are seldom seen or photographed in flight.

We did receive more than 6000 photos during our work with the book, which arrived from all over the World; Australia, Asia, Europe and North America! Then we had to sort out the photos that we wanted to include in the book, which wasn´t that easy with 6000 more or less brilliant photos to chose from! It was a tough selection and we had to drop many beautiful photos in order to reach the right number. Finally, we had 690 photos left which we wanted to include in the book. We are completely convinced that the number and quality of the photos that will be included will create the most complete selection of in-flight photos of European Seabirds and Wildfowl ever! We hope you will enjoy the photographic material in the book, as much as we do!

The Swedish birder and photographer, Göran Ekström, have provided many photos to the book.
